Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
These keyboard shortcuts work on modern versions of Windows and in most Windows applications.
Editing
- Ctrl+X: Cut the highlighted text or selected object (copies the object to the Windows clipboard and deletes it from the current view)
- Ctrl+C: Copy the highlighted text or selected object.
- Ctrl+V: Paste the current contents of the clipboard into the current document.
- ÿ+V: Open the clipboard history.
- Ctrl+Z: Undo the previous action/edit.
- Ctrl+A: Select all text or objects.
- Ctrl+F: Find (search for text in a document)
- Ctrl+B: Turn on bold text formatting.
- Ctrl+I: Turn on italics text formatting.
- Ctrl+U: Turn on underline text formatting.
- Ctrl+←: Move the cursor one word to the left.
- Ctrl+→: Move the cursor one word to the right.
- Ctrl+↑: Move the cursor one paragraph up.
- Ctrl+↓: Move the cursor one paragraph down.
- Shift+←/→: Highlight text starting at the current position, one character at a time.
- Shift+↑/↓: Highlight text starting at the current position, one line at a time.
- Ctrl+Shift+←/→: Highlight text starting at the current position, one word at a time.
- Ctrl+Shift+↑/↓: Highlight text starting at the current position, one paragraph at a time.
- Home: Move the cursor to the beginning of the line.
- Shift+Home: Highlight from the current cursor position to the beginning of the line.
- End: Move the cursor to the end of the line.
- Shift+End: Highlight from the current cursor position to the end of the line.
File Operations
- Ctrl+S: Save the current file.
- Ctrl+O: Open a file.
- Ctrl+P: Print the current document.
- Ctrl+N: Open a new document.
Windows General
- Alt+Tab: Switch between open application windows. (Hold Alt, and repeatedly press Tab to select other open windows.)
- ÿ+Tab: Display Task View. (Show all open application windows.)
- ÿ or Ctrl+Esc: Open the Start menu.
- Tab: Move to next field in a multi-field dialog box.
- Shift+Tab: Move to previous field in a multi-field dialog box.
- Enter: OK
- Esc: Cancel
- Alt+Enter: Properties of selected file/object.
- Ctrl+Shift+S: Open the snipping/screenshot tool.
- Ctrl+scroll wheel: Zoom in/out.
Browser Shortcuts
- Ctrl+T: Open a new tab.
- Ctrl+Shift+T: Reopen last closed tab.
- Ctrl+Tab: Cycle through tabs.
- Ctrl+J: Show downloads
- Ctrl+N: Open a new window.
- Ctrl+Shift+O: Show favorites.
- Ctrl+H: Show history.
- Ctrl+Shift+Y: Open collections in Edge.
- Ctrl+Shift+U: Read page aloud in Edge.
- Shift+Esc: Open the browser task manager (helps determine which tabs are using memory or processor power).
Function Keys
- F1: Open help.
- F2: Rename selected file/object.
- F3: Find or Find Next (not in Word or Excel).
- Alt+F4: Close the current window.
- F5: Refresh (or Go To in Word)
- F7: Spell Check
- Shift+F7: Grammar Check in Word
- F8: Extend the selection in Word
- Shift+F10: Same as right-clicking the selected object.
